Import student data
Who this is for: Counselors and Platform Admins Time: 5-10 minutes You'll need: A CSV or Excel file of teacher comments or academic records
What this does
Bulk-imports teacher comments or grades/academic records for students from a CSV or Excel file, matching each row to an existing student or creating a new one.
Before you begin
- Confirm your school does not have an active SIS integration. Import is disabled while SIS sync is active for a school.
- If you're a Platform Admin with access to multiple schools, select the target school from the school selector in the top nav first.
- Have your file ready in
.csv,.tsv,.xlsx, or.xlsformat, with no more than 1,000 rows.
Open Data Import
Go to Settings > Data Import.
This card shows your last completed import and any saved field mappings for your school.
Start the import
Click Import Data to open the import wizard.
If the button is disabled, an active SIS integration is syncing data for your school — see If something looks wrong.
Choose a data type
Pick Teacher Comments or Grades / Academic Records. Each import handles one data type at a time.
Click Continue.
Upload your file
Click the upload area and select your CSV or Excel file.
Need a template? Click See sample CSV to download a sample file for the data type you picked.
Map your columns
Match each column in your file to an Addie field.
- Columns already saved from a previous import for this data type are pre-filled.
- Fields outlined in green are required.
- At least one of Student ID or Student Email should be mapped so rows match to the right student. Rows that don't match an existing student automatically create a new student.
You can't continue until every required field is mapped. Your mapping is saved for your school and reused on future imports.
Click Continue.
Preview and confirm
Review the first 5 rows. Each row shows whether it looks good or lists specific errors to fix in your file.
Click Confirm Import to start the import.
What happens next
- The import runs in the background; the wizard shows a processing screen while it works.
- When it finishes, you'll see counts for rows created, updated, skipped, and conflicted, plus how many new students were auto-created.
- If any rows conflicted, click Download conflicts CSV to see which rows and why, fix them, and re-import.
- Click Done to close the wizard. The Data Import card updates with your latest run.
If something looks wrong
The Import Data button is disabled
Your school has an active SIS integration, so CSV import is turned off to avoid conflicting data. Use the SIS sync instead, or ask an admin to disconnect the SIS integration if you need to use CSV import.
It says to select a school
As a Platform Admin with access to multiple schools, pick a school from the school selector in the top nav before importing.
Required fields won't let me continue
Every field marked "(required)" in the mapping step must be matched to a column in your file. Check for typos in your file's headers, or download the sample CSV to compare against.
Rows show as conflicted
Download the conflicts CSV to see the reason for each conflicted row, correct the data in your source file, and re-import just those rows.
New students got created that I didn't expect
No matching Student ID or Student Email was found for those rows, so Addie created a new student. Check that your Student ID or Student Email column is mapped and matches values already in Addie.
